From Scrum Master to French coffee moments: Maxim’s journey to multilingualism

Maxim test engineer en scrum master bij M2Q

For a few months now, Maxim, has been in a mainly French-speaking team in Brussels. At M2Q, we believe that our employees make the difference. Therefore, we support them in their personal and professional growth, such as for example by offering them the opportunity to study French so that they can integrate even better in international teams and communication.

This is Maxim’s story!

For a few months now, I have been in a mainly French-speaking team in Brussels. For work-related matters, communication is in English, but about small talk is mostly en Français. I tried to follow people during coffee moments, but in reality this was looking at them with my best gaze that didn’t reveal that they might as well be speaking Mandarin.
As a newcomer and Scrum Master on the team, this is not ideal, and I still wanted to try to make some deeper contact than a Jira ticket.

Around this time, M2Q came up with a great proposal: personalized French tutoring. The short-term benefits to team dynamics, combined with the doors that could be opened in the long term, were enough to convince me. So in full wedding planning, with a new job and far too little time on my hands, I thought, “Let’s do it!”.

Still, after a day of mentally focusing on a screen, it was harder than expected to conjure up another 2 hours of attention to follow along.
Also making the exercises in between to keep up was a bit of a search at times.
For example, my morning routine on our annual family vacation in the Ardennes was to repeat a croissant and the weekly grammaire….

But under the good care (and much puzzling in terms of schedules) of our teacher, we still managed to bring the course to a nice conclusion.

So herewith thanks to: M2Q for the wonderful opportunity.Yannick Schrey for guiding us through lessons, even during the slightly more difficult days!

Et moi ? Je vais prendre un café et parler avec mon équipe du beau temps et de la pluie.
